Climate Controlled Storage VS
Non Climate Controlled Storage
Self Storage Facilities are on the rise as Canada downsizes. Whether it’s due to the condo boom, divorce, death or changing tastes, storage facilities have doubled across Canada over the last decade. People find themselves space-challenged but unable to part with the material items that represent their lives. Renovation, remodeling and the coming and going of grown children have all meant that old furnishings have had to find safe homes away from home. In response to the growing need, storage facilities are popping up everywhere. There are different kinds of storage facilities to choose from but it ultimately comes down to choosing between a Climate Controlled Storage Unit and a Non Climate Controlled Storage Unit.
What does “Climate Controlled” actually mean?
There are “climate controlled” storage facilities and then there are “temperature controlled” storage facilities with the most common difference between the two being humidity. Temperature controlled facilities manage the temperature only while climate controlled facilities manage both the temperature and the humidity, which is needed to control moisture levels in the space.
To make this decision a little easier, answer these 3 questions:
1. What items are you storing?
2. How long do you plan to store them?
3. Is your storage location a region with extreme temperatures?
Storage Options
Basic Self Storage – Non Climate Controlled
The standard outdoor storage units is the low-cost option and typically function more like a garage with the ability to drive right up to the door for easy off and on-loading. Being able to access your unit on any day, at any time is very convenient but aside from a roof that keeps the rain out, it offers minimal protection from the weather. Depending on where you live, extreme fluctuations in temperatures – from hot summers to cold winters – can damage a variety of your items. Electronics, furniture, pictures and important documents would not do well stored in an outdoor facility.
There are plenty of items that can be stored safely here. All garage type items such as lawn mowers, gardening supplies, bicycles, certain tools and even properly packed kitchen ware and clothes would fare well in outdoor facilities.
Indoor Climate Controlled Storage
While climate controlled storage may cost you more monthly, your belongings will be in the same shape they went in, when they come out. Fragile items that are susceptible to changes in the temperature and moisture levels should be stored here. Dramatic changes in temperature results in condensation, especially when it is humid out, and that water can short out electronics, stain important documents and pictures and encourage mold and mildew to form. There are certain items that need to be stored in a temperature and humidity controlled environment, including:
- musical instruments
- art work
- books and important documents
- all electronics
- medical supplies
- fur costs and plush toys
Climate Controlled facilities maintain a temperature between 55 and 80 degrees. Not entirely comfortable for people but more than adequate to keep your belongings from being damaged.
In Climate Controlled Facilities, units are not accessed directly from outside. Access is controlled through secure entrances allowing units to be completely unaffected by the temperature outside. Access is normally limited to regular business hours for added security.
The monthly rate is much higher for these units but if you want to guarantee that your belongings will be kept in excellent condition while out of your care, than it’s the only way to go.
