February, along with the record breaking spring like temperatures, is coming to an end. It has been anything but a typical winter in Muskoka and many are wondering what Mother Nature has in store for us in March. I have a feeling that old man winter is not done with us yet as he tries to bring our normal winter conditions back to our area.
Flooding is still a real concern for many this year. The increase in storage unit rentals indicates that people are worried and preparing for the worse. We would like to wish everyone a safe and happy Family Day.
Snow Removal has been a daily chore for many of us here in Muskoka and it just keeps coming. Granted, it is post card pretty with the trees constantly covered in fresh snow and beautiful icicles hanging from their branches but enough is enough already. Our current snow amounts have people worried about the spring thaw already and Mother Nature is not done with us yet. The snow we have on the ground right now would melt down to 130 mm or 5.5 inches of water and more snow is on the way. Many are worried about their homes flooding when the spring thaw starts and trying to prepare for it anyway they can. One way you can prepare is by moving some of your belongings, that could be in harms way, into a storage unit. Thousands of homes were effected by last year's thaw with some devastating results. Basement furniture, electronics, important documents and pictures that would be damaged if your home flooded could be stored in our secure, climate controlled storage facility where everything would be safe and dry. For more information and to find out about our specials please call Wanda at 705-640-0040 or you can e-mail wanda@aspiremuskoka.ca. Please check out our website at www.aspiremuskoka.ca

TIPS FOR MOVING WITH CHILDREN
The decision is final......You are moving! Now you need to tell your kids. Children of all ages typically are not thrilled to move and make such a big change. They normally do not have any input about whether to move or not which makes them feel powerless, so make sure you involve them in as many decisions regarding the move as possible. Your attitude regarding the move will have a huge impact on how they are feeling. Be happy, excited and check in with them often to see how they are feeling about the move.
Here are some tips to help make the move easier on your kids.
1. Prepare them for what to expect. The unknown is
scary to most of us. Have a family meeting to let
your kids know that you are moving and why. If this
is their first move then they will be leaving
the only home they have known. Tell them about
your first move and encourage them to express their
feelings and concerns. Let them know how
important they are in the entire process of the move.
and how much you are depending on them to help.
2. Get them involved. Once you have narrowed your
house hunting down to a handful of possiblilities,
ask them for help with the selection process. Show
Show them your choices and the surrounding
area. Discuss the pro's and con's of each house
and include them in the final decision.
3. Time to Purge. Explain that not everything can go
with you to the new house. Take them room to
room to help decide what is no longer needed and
not going to the new house. Create 4
differents piles and include them in the decision of
what to Keep, Sell, Donate or Toss.
4. Moving Sale. Ask the kids to help organize a
moving sale by sorting through the Sell pile
and pricing each item. Let them know
that the proceeds from the sale will be used to
purchase something fun for the new house.
5. Research your new area. Learn as much as you
can about the neighbourhood or town you are
moving to and share the information with your kids.
If they will be attending a new school, go online and
look up their new school. If you are close enough,
drive them by the new school and let them get out
to explore. If not show them plenty of pictures
of the town and school.
6. Discuss their new rooms. Get the kids excited
about the new house by discussing how they
would like their new rooms to be
decorated. Get some paint chips so they decide
what colour they would like their room to be.
7. Moving Day. Try to unpack the kids rooms first to
get them settled and surround by their own things
as quickly as possible.
Moving is a very stressful event for everyone. Encourage your children to discuss how they are feeling and address any concerns they may have.
